Looking back at old ROM hacks -- KL Final Fantasy, part 3

Last time, I defeated the Taliban but found that apparently they weren't the source of the Turban Plague afflicting the town of Muffind after all.  Now...

...time to go weapon shopping, apparently.  Nummite Sword for Kurb!
Also, found the guy who eats Kirbys.  Apparently pink Kirbys taste like chicken.
And here's a useless weapon that I'll never actually use, as only Kurb could equip it and it was weaker than the sword he already had.
On the other side of the tunnel now... that must be Sardine's cave over there.  This island is completely inaccessible by any means other than this cave, so it's a good thing you only really need to go here once.
And here's the cave.  To the left is Sardine's room... and to the upper-right is a room full of potion bottles and a skull on the floor.  In the original game this was just decoration, but if you step on the skull in this hack....
...you're suddenly attacked by freaking CTHULHU out of nowhere.  Yep.
And, as you probably could've guessed (due to being, y'know, Cthulhu)... he's ridiculously strong for this point in the game.  Muyeo's Light Wave spell actually does decent damage to him, but not nearly enough to keep up with the 6-8 hit, 200+ damage, poison/sleep inducing attacks he's using!
Yeah, this doesn't last all that long.  Good thing I knew about this hidden super-boss fight and used a save state beforehand.
And here's Sardine, who gives you an item for opening the way to the lower half of Tora Bora Cave.
But first, I get attacked by excessively powerful sharks (two of them are not the ordinary "Shark" enemy but the stronger "Great White") and get my butt kicked.  Again, saved states save the day.
Oh hey, here's another area I can reach now that I have a boat.  It's just south of Sardine's cave, actually.
And there's new armor! Claws can equip the Tiny Shield (and no other shields), while the Silver Armor is a decent upgrade for both her and Froog.  Only Kurb can equip the Blurby Hat, presumably because Blurbys are also round critters so his body shape is the only one close enough for it to work.

Also, I can afford level 4 magic now (and Kihlah, as this shop offers Wudimok and Blubberwukk for Kurb... later on when I can afford them, anyway.)
But instead I get the Antidote spell, because having to lug around a dozen antidote potions all the time is getting annoying.
Apparently this old sage dude is Gohan?  I guess either it was Grandpa Gohan, or Goku's son got old really fast. XD
And... here's a completely unchanged text box.  Doesn't even say "Butt Warriors" or anything.  Whoops!
Random encounter with Yuckow Nums here, and Kurb wipes them out pretty quick thanks to Fire Wave.
A preview of a later area, which I can't reach just yet due to having no canoe.
These are pretty wimpy.  The only annoying bit is how they tend to blind you with their attacks, but that doesn't stop magic from wiping them out pretty quick.
Now back to Tora Bora Cave, where the old Tank/Fnrrf formation has been upgraded with stronger Fnrrf variations.  The "Ygm Schnish" can blind you or put you to sleep in addition to just attacking.
Also, for some odd reason there are large groups of Ians and J.Blowmans running around on the lowest level of this cave.
And here it is... the boss.
And... yep, it's Osama bin Laden.  It should've been obvious considering that this is Tora Bora Cave, and the miniboss was a Taliban guy, but... yeah.
Well, it's sort of Osama bin Laden, anyway -- graphics are completely unchanged, so he looks like a skeleton dude with a purple spooky aura still. XD
Starting off, it's pretty obvious this is going to be a hard fight -- my attacks (magic/Kihlah excluded, of course) hardly do any damage and his do pretty heavy damage and paralyze me.  But it seems "beatable"...

...well, until this happened, anyway.  Yeah, that Nuke attack is just way too strong for this point in the game -- it's virtually impossible to survive it, and even if you do, you won't survive another hit from anything else afterward.  I though for sure that I had fixed him to not use Nuke in this fight, only in the rematch at the end of the game, but apparently not.
He also sometimes uses Quake, which is less ridiculously overpowered (and can be resisted with the Anti-Earth spell) but still is more than enough to finish everyone off pretty quick at this point in the game.

After reloading my pre-boss save state, escaping from Tora Bora, and getting healed, I decide to wander around a bit and level up in hopes that I'll actually be able to beat this guy if I do.
 Here's a place I can't get to yet!
Also, Stitch clones make a reappearance... including a stronger one that's actually called a Stitch Clone, which dodges attacks all the time and can paralyze you (plus takes much more damage to beat than the Prototypes.)
Another area I can't reach yet!
And another! This is the Ice Cave, I'm pretty sure.
And this, of course, is the volcano... which I also can't reach yet.
Hmm... I think I may have found this hack's equivalent of the "level up fast" peninsula from the original.  There's one little strip of forest on the edge of the mountain/river area leading up to the volcano where these guys show up.  Surprisingly not too hard, either! (...unless you get super unlucky and run into four of them, like I did once while fiddling around here.)
These, on the other hand, are a bit tougher to deal with.  Oddly, the regular Hydra is much more of a threat than the red one -- I think the same was true in the original game, too, if I'm remembering right.
And there's these guys, who look like the Wizard enemies from the original but have the Sorceror's insta-death attacks sometimes rather than just causing a good chunk of damage.

They were also named after a friend's (somewhat spoofy) suggestion on what I could use as the name for the creatures that I had originally called "Cthulhus" in one of my old stories.  I think the way he actually said it was something like "Squoodface" for some odd reason, but at the time I was making this I wasn't sure how to actually spell that so I just went with plain ol' Squidface. XD
Also these guys, which have been recolored but otherwise still look the same.  Cowcocows are humanoid cow aliens I made up when I was 6 years old, by the way.
Those don't look like Victreebels... they don't look like Victreebels at all.  But that's mainly because I never got around to changing their sprites, heh.  They do at least have a Victreebel-appropriate special attack!
Also this thing, which seemed like a bit of a pushover compared to the other enemies here -- fairly weak attacks, and not much defense either.

After a period of fighting stronger-than-what-I'm-supposed-to-fight-right-now enemies, I can now afford to stock up on level 4 magic and Kihlah, as seen above.  Also, some leveling up happened and now Muyeo can use Antidote or Warp three times.

Warp, as it turns out, is good for more than just escaping dungeons in this game -- it's also an attack when used in battle, and does some pretty good damage to one enemy... very handy for boss fights!
The results of my leveling-up spree.  Everyone's approaching (if not past) 200 HP now.
I managed to catch one of the Ians in the process of running away... not quite quick enough to get the "Run away" message that flashes on the screen for like a second, but close.

And the rematch with Osama bin Laden begins with Kurb busting out one of his new moves.  It did pretty decent damage, but not as good as Muyeo's Warp spell.
Shown here.  I think this one was pushing 90 damage on him sometimes, which was the most anything I had was capable of doing at this point.
Just when it looked like I was going to lose for sure... Claws manages to finish him off with a Zzzter spell that did something like 20 damage.
Thankfully, there's a thing behind the boss area that lets  you teleport out so there's no need to try and get a single 2 HP character aaaaaaaall the way back up through the entire cave.  Which is good, because that would've been pretty much impossible.
Yay, no more Turban Plague! Whatever that actually was.
Ummm... yeah, I've kinda already been there and all...
Yay, everyone's not dead anymore! Thanks Pope Beardy McNo-Mouth XXII!
And now I have a canoe!
...and am immediately attacked by a Zukku the second I row a few tiles away from town. XD

Anyway, that's all for this time.  Next one of these will probably cover at least part of the volcano and ice cave, though I don't know if I'll finish up either of them just yet.
