I'm not sure why the title is "The Return of Ian," considering that if I had actually finished this game it would've been the first appearance of Ian in any of my games/stories/etc... but oh well. We left off at a game-breaking bug at the end of World 1, where the airship moved to a place I couldn't actually walk to... and so I used the Magic Butt to warp out of there.
World 2 in this game has changed from the original's desert level to more of a "tropical jungle ruins" sort of thing. There's palm trees and various weird plants (such as Lava Lotuses appearing aboveground), lots of gold stuff (like that non-functional Muncher Launcher above), and lots of pillars and stone blocks as also seen above.
There's also giant bugs, borrowed from the original NES Metroid, that fly in from the sides of the screens. These are actually Spiny Cheep-Cheeps with their graphics replaced (as the regular Cheep-Cheeps got changed into seals in this game), so you can't jump on them.
More odd plants. These little ones replace the small, round cacti that were there in the original game.
First castle-type level of this place, and everything is all gold and stuff. Also, The Burp-type faces replace Roto-Discs. I can't remember if they showed up in World 1 or not, but if not, well... here they are!
And Thwomps are replaced by... giant bags of poo. Which, appropriately, are labeled "POO" in big blue letters. Somehow these do not splatter all over when they fall down from the ceiling to try and crush you. Somebody must've been really constipated.
Here's a definite change from the original version of this level. That spikey tunnel leads to an alternate ending of the level, with some Chain Chomps (well, Skull Narms, but they're just Chain Chomps with different graphics) and then a gray Soom-Soom. But to get there you either need to bring an invincibility star into the level with you, or have a power-up or two and run through there really fast.
And for some reason the poo-bag here glitched up, probably because of the Skull Narms a screen's-length below in the alternate path.
I actually kinda like this bit, where you have to sneak in under the poo-bag quickly and slip down the hole just in time for it to hit the block above you rather than hitting you.
The moving spikes room, which now has neon blue bugs rather than Boos.
There's the Soom-Soom from the end of the alternate path over there, just barely visible as you get to the other end of the level. He doesn't try to attack when you're on his right side, thankfully.
...and here's the other Soom-Soom. Not much difference (if any) between the two of them, though I suppose the other one could've been the kind that grows wings... I didn't check when I was playing through this time. XD
Yep, in this game there's a "pipe" level you can actually die in, if you jump down the waterfall in the middle and don't try to swim or something.
And here we have the first appearance of one of the silliest-looking enemies in the game... the humping mosquitoes. They replace Lakitus. They'll fly through the air, humping constantly, and every once and a while toss down a spiky green egg that bounces around obnoxiously.
They also make this level pretty much hell to get through. It doesn't look so bad at first, but... yeah, it gets worse.
I managed to knock the mosquitoes out of the sky here, but unfortunately... they'll be back.
Seen here: green mosquito egg and also a spiky worm that would've hatched from a red mosquito egg if those appeared in this level (they don't, there's just a bunch of the worms crawling around in the water area here.)
And... yeah, I got a game over from Humping Mosquito Hell. I think it ended up taking me something like 10 tries to finally beat that ridiculous level.
FINALLY. No more humping mosquitoes.
And here's the "angry sun chases you" level. Now with seals jumping from puddle to puddle, randomly.
This level is almost entirely unchanged from the original, it seems.
This "two tall block towers with a block with an item in it" thing is even still there.
And here's another ruins-type level, with weird-looking Stoopas.
And... apparently the Munchers are replaced with the little Subcon guys from Mario 2. I think I mentioned that in my first post on this one, but there's more of them in this level than in previous ones.
And... unless there's a P-switch somewhere that I just didn't manage to find, this level is completely impossible to beat. Whoops!
Hmm... there's a treasure ship just randomly hanging out over there.
And there's a Magic Butt at the end! Yay!
And they turned the king into a Metroid enemy! Noooo!
The golden airship at the end of the level. Complete with golden Muncher Launchers, shooting golden Munchers.
...a lot of golden Munchers.
Also, knife-throwing gangster moles hiding in the floor of the ship and popping out. The knife's flight is a little glitchy-looking after it's thrown, though.
And here's the "you un-mutated the king" message, which I wasn't able to show for the first world because that airship flight path glitch made it impossible for me to beat it. Yeah, the first thought of these kings is always that they can have sex with the queen (not shown... unless she's the mushroom jumping up and down there? XD) again...
And here's the "letter from the princess" scene... all of these are spoofed up pretty severely from the original, too. As there are no Lakitus in the game, their cloud that you could previously use to skip levels is now a Fart Cloud, which still does the same thing but with more nasty smells involved.
Next up... world 3, where everything is randomly grayscale for some reason. Here's a little preview of the first bit of the map screen:
