Looking back -- Sumo Fatio Bros.: The Return of Ian, part 3

I left off last time at the beginning of Game Boy Land, or whatever the all-grayscale world was supposed to be.  The last post had the map screen in it, but here it is again:

Yep... everything looking pretty gray here.  Well, except Fatio, the canoe, and the Yo Brothers wandering on the map.  It also looks pretty similar to the original game's map, with a few things moved around (a bit more so later, but... yeah.)
And apparently I forgot to edit one Mario sprite into Fatio -- I caught this screenshot in the middle of small Fatio getting a donut and transforming into his bigger, afro-ier self.  Whoops!
And yeah, pretty much all of the levels in grayscale land are... exactly the same as the levels in the original game, but all gray.
Oh, and there's penis monsters instead of the squids.  Yep.  The "Blooper Nanny" that originally had a group of smaller squids following behind it is now a penis with a bunch of sperm following it.
 ...as seen here.
Here's the Frog Suit.  Or actually, Fish Suit.  Except I never actually changed the in-game graphics to match, so Fatio looks like a fish on the map screen but not inside the levels.
Yep... just like this level in the original game.  Except the blocks now inexplicably say "POOP" on them, the fish are seals, and the Koopas are Stoopas.  Oh, and random trash cans everywhere.
Opening the menu de-grayscales some parts of the map, as apparently I didn't realize they used the same palettes back then.
The island layouts are slightly different now -- two of the levels are on little islands by themselves.  Which, it turns out, was a really bad idea as losing in one of those levels will send you back to a different island and you'll lose the canoe forever, which can mean you'll be stuck and unable to finish the rest of the world.  Whoops.
Another version of Li'l Sumo-San appears here, replacing Spike.  These ones basically generate and throw Dragonball Z style ki blasts at you.
Flooded castle, full of seals and The Burp.  Who, due to flashing color palettes, sometimes isn't grayscale.
The Bob-Omb replacement.  Little turban-wearing suicide bomber terrorist guys.
Yep.  I'm really not sure why I edited the "explosion stars," because the edited version looks pretty bad.  Like "MS Paint scribble" bad.
Here's the fish suit in action...
...and then you're randomly a frog once you actually go into a level.  And once again, the king is a Metroid enemy.
Yep, knife-throwing moles all over the place here.  And randomly, the enemies on the airship are not in grayscale like they were everywhere else.
And... yep, there's the oh-so-useless music box item.  I suppose not entirely useless since it's the only way to skip the Piranha Plant levels in world 7, but other than that... yeah.  I also messed up in editing its graphics somehow, so it's part of the word "POO" and part of a music note sometimes.
Well, world 4 certainly looks a bit different! It's all lava-y and stuff now!
Taking one pipe brings me to this side of the map, where there's a castle I can only reach from there.  If I'm remembering right, beating the other castle unlocks that door blocking off this side of the map, while beating this castle makes a bridge appear.
And... the levels aren't really changed.  Just their palettes.  Huh.
Zombie Toad and Yen-bubble things that appear when you hit a P-switch, here.
And... randomly, the side-facing Piranha Plants are replaced with Birdo.  Weird.
...okay, there's a level that's actually been edited! The rising/falling water here has been swapped out for lava!
Also, giant pipes have part of the word "SEWER" on them, but cut off in the middle.  Whoops.

Anyway, this level is otherwise exactly the same as the original -- the water-to-lava swap is the only change.
Here's a cave level with the little Geno-hat-wearing things in it.
And here's the other castle, with poo-bags and flames that don't sprout feet like the original game's version did.
Also, Boos are replaced with Phantos here, and they look sad when you're staring at them.
More Muncher Launchers, this time with the color-changing homing ones.
And then there's... this.  That's not a Tanooki Suit anymore.  Those ears and tails look oddly familiar.  Could this be...
...yep.  Yeah, that is definitely what this is.  It's the "Evil Pikachu Suit," a slightly redundantly-named item (is there any other kind of Pikachu?) which lets you fly with its tail and also turn into a Pikachu statue to smush things and/or avoid them.
Here it is in map-screen mode, too.
And the king here is another Metroid creature... a Metroid, to be specific.  And his crown does not fit at all, just kinda floating to the side there.
I just had to get a "stomping a rocket-engine flame as a statue" screenshot, since that's always been one of my favorite weird little things you can do with the Tanooki Suit.

Unfortunately, it seems this level has a case of the "airship goes to places you can't reach" bug too, so I had to escape using a Magic Butt rather than actually beating the level.
And here's the slightly rearranged Warp Zone... I'm not sure what's up with those extra four pipes over on the righthand side, but the others are pretty self-explanatory: arranged by even/odd numbers rather than 2/3/4 and 5/6/7.  I assume one of the pipes on the right goes to world 8, but where could the others go...?  I won't find out anytime soon. XD

Anyway... next time is world 5, which is also not all that changed.  I'll probably go ahead and cover 6, 7, and maybe even 8 in the same post since they're all going to be pretty much palette swaps of the original with a few changed enemy sprites and such around.
